SHAKE STEW

SHAKE STEW ON THE COVER OF JAZZTHETIK MAGAZINE!!
Jazzthetik Cover Shake Stew 1

Great reviews are coming in for “Gris Gris”
– MOJO 4****

„Able to blind you into a trance and make you dance to your knees, Gris Gris twists, blisters and burns like a fevered dream! […] Shake Stew have forged a fierce reputation for sprawling sets that nod to the ’60s spiritual jazz of Alice Coltrane and Pharoah Sanders undercut with Sons of Kemet’s interlocking rhythmic fluidity. “

“Shake Stew, la révélation autrichienne de l’année”

Jazzthing #1 of 2019

Gris Gris was named the Nr.1 Album for 2019 from all employees of Jazzthing Magazine!

Jazz Revelations (UK)

“Records. Sitting between the realms of spiritual jazz, afrobeat and just utter madness, Shake Stew have forged a herculean record which is utterly scintillating. The opening track, ‘I Can Feel the Heat Closing In’, sets the tone of the album, beginning with the double bass pair laying down rambunctious bass grooves which are supplemented with alternating percussive rhythmic patterns. The horns add to the scene by weaving in a harmonious North African modal melodic line, which continues whilst Clemens Salesny’s alto saxophone wails over the top, raising your blood pressure and flow of adrenaline as a sense of impending pandemonium washes over you. From the get-go, ‘I Can Feel the Heat Closing In’ demonstrates Shake Stew’s sense of control: their control of pace, their control of complex rhythms as well as their complete control of textures, all of which combine to create a powerful wall of sound.”

Guardian

“Dynamic young Austrian septet Shake Stew, like a folksier Snarky Puppy, rip through their increasingly media-grabbing mix of haunting brass laments, feverish polyphonic folk dances, swarming-bees collective improv and racing drumming on Gris Gris.”

German newspaper DIE ZEIT heavily features Shake Stew in their Feuilleton reporting from our 5-days residency at Jazzclub Unterfahrt in Munich at the beginning of september. They send a reporter over for the whole (!) week, joining us not only at the concerts but also at rehearsals,…
It’s great to see such a big newspaper appreciating the work we do and trying to get every aspect of our music! Big thanks to Ulrich Stock who spend so much time with us. Here is the link for an online version including a 30-min live version of Stone of Mu & Preaching to the Choir from our first night:
